The scale and complexity of the project were unlike anything delivered at the Games before, including the ambition to provide new graphics and augmented reality services to really “wow” viewers.

To meet these challenges, Discovery not only enhanced its in-house team by hiring highly experienced staff with strong Olympic Games expertise but also partnered with experienced industry-leading external experts to deliver technical services that would redefine Games broadcasting.

Discovery partnered with Deltatre to provide services for both digital media and broadcast television to ensure that viewers received the very highest digital experience ever offered across Europe. Deltatre provided the detailed results services that allowed fans across Europe to keep up-to-date with real-time results for every single event, medals tables, athlete information, country data and more, across the web, tablet, and mobile devices. Combined with competition video and editorial content, Deltatre services helped power many of the critical experiences Discovery and Eurosport shared with consumers.

Ralph Rivera, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Eurosport Digital, said: “Delivering the first digital Olympics across Europe, including every minute live, was a highly ambitious aspiration that we were humbled to deliver. We knew that consumers would want to have every moment of the live action at their fingertips and we committed to delivering this to the highest standard. We were able to deliver by working with great partners and are pleased to have worked with Deltatre to provide the real-time sports information we shared with fans. We knew that Deltatre was the most experienced company in this highly specialized and critical area, having provided digital and broadcast services for the world’s top Olympic rights holders. Our expectations of Deltatre were met with great professionalism and quality. Together we achieved the gold.”

Ciaran Quinn, Executive Vice President, Deltatre, said: “Having been involved in digital aspects of every Olympic Games since Athens 2004, I knew that when we agreed to support Discovery that they were taking on an immense challenge that was highly ambitious. But they hired the best in the business, including us, and went about their work with a strong process, planning, and robust testing. The Olympic Games are never easy behind the scenes, but this game was by far the smoothest one technically for all involved, setting a new standard for future broadcasters. I felt incredibly proud of the Discovery, Eurosport and Deltatre teams for what was accomplished together for millions of Olympic fans across Europe.”
